VTOL vs fixed-wing drone: which airframe for which mission
Hand-launched fixed-wing, hybrid VTOL fixed-wing, or multirotor — how take-off method, range and payload decide the airframe for reconnaissance, mapping and ISR.
The choice between a VTOL fixed-wing drone and a plain fixed-wing drone comes down to three questions: where does it take off, how far does it have to go, and what is it carrying. Everything else follows from those.

Take-off is the first filter
A hand-launched fixed-wing airframe needs a person, a clear throw and a few metres of run-out on recovery. A hybrid VTOL fixed-wing drone lifts off vertically on rotors from a clearing, a rooftop or a moving vehicle, then transitions to wing-borne cruise. The VTOL capability costs weight and some endurance; it buys you launch from anywhere, with no launcher and no landing strip.
